Personal Hygiene Issue: Proper Hand Washing Technique

Proper hand washing technique is very important in the kitchen as we are always in constant contact with germs. If we do not follow the proper technique to wash our hands before coming into contact with food, it may lead to contamination in food resulting in food poisoning. This may also cause people to lose confidence in the food you cook subsequently. Here is the proper hand washing procedure.

Step 1: Remove jewellery before wetting hands and wrist with warm water.

Step 2: Use one or two squirts of liquid or foam soap.

Step 3: Rub hands palm to palm .

Step 4:Scrub in between and around fingers and vice versal.

Step 5: Palm to palm with fingers interacted.

Step 6; Scrub fingertips of each hand in opposite palm and vice versal.

Step 7: Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice versal.

Step 8: Wrap right hand over left wrist using rotational movements and vice versal.

Step 9: Rinse hand thoroughly under running water.

Step 10: Pat hand dry with paper towel.

Step 11: Turn off water using same paper towel.

  5. A detailed explanation on how one should wash his or her hands thoroughly. However, is it possible if i could know what are the common microorganisms involved when hands are not properly washed? Where can they be found and does washing with soap kill them completely? thank you ;)

  6. @subash For example, if you just came out from the washroom and your hands are not properly washed, you may get diarrhea or respiratory infections like hand-food-mouth disease due to micro organisms like Salmonella, E. coli O157 or norovirus , which are commonly found in feces. Whether the soap would kill the microorganisms completely? Well.. it depends on the type of soap that you use. Regular household soap or cleanser does not kill germs but lifts them off the skin surface, allowing the microbes and soil bits to be rinsed down the drain. While antimicrobial or antibacterial soap does kill bacteria and other microorganisms, and can sometimes inhibit their future growth.

  7. A very detailed and descriptive blog to show us the correct way the clean our hands. It also shows that having our hands clean is important before we do anything in the kitchen to prevent any food contamination. However, i would really love to know if different water temperature used would have an impact in the effectiveness of killing the microorganism.
